TOTAL IN SYRIA
TOTAL Exploration & Production Syrie, a 100% affiliate of TOTAL
Group, has started its activities in Syria since 1988 by
operating Deir ez Zor license through Deir ez Zor Petroleum
Company (DEZPC, a joint operating company 50% TOTAL and 50%
Syrian Petroleum Company).
Deir ez Zor Petroleum Company’s contract includes 9 production fields of which the most important ones are Jafra, Qahar and Atalla fields.
The current production is about 30000 barrel per day. Deir ez Zor Petroleum Company is using many different techniques in order to optimize the production level, such as water injection and gas re-injection to maintain the pressure in the reservoir and to increase the oil recovery.
The Deir ez Zor’s Production Sharing Agreement, PSA 88, has been extended for additional 10 years from 2011 till 2021 in order to allow new investments and to increase oil and gas recovery in the above mentioned fields.
DEZPC was awarded an ISO 14001 certification on the 6th of December 2007.
TOTAL announced in September 2008 that three new agreements for oil and gas were signed with the Syrian government.
The first one is the 10 year extension of the PSA.
The second one, related to Tabiyeh field, is aiming at enhancing the gas and liquids production from Tabiyeh resulting in a significant increase of the gas delivery to the local market from Deir ez Zor gas plant.
In addition to these contracts, a Cooperation Framework Agreement (CFA) was signed in order to establish a new strategic partnership between TOTAL SA, TOTAL E&P Syrie and the General Petroleum Corporation. The purpose of this agreement is to develop new activities in oil and gas, upstream and downstream, such as exploration, tight gas development, EOR and hydrocarbon transportation.
TOTAL E&P Syrie exerts particular efforts by carrying out studies, applying expertise acquired from TOTAL international experience and promoting new techniques or technologies in good cooperation with the Syrian Petroleum Company, in addition to the technical trainings of the employees.
In 1999, TOTAL E&P Syrie has built with Conoco the DEZ gas plant on a “B.O.T” basis (Build, Operate, and Transfer). The plant was operated till December 2005 and successfully handed out to the Syrian Gas Company. TOTAL EP Syrie has kept on bringing technical assistance to SGC.
Regarding oil products marketing operations, TOTAL sold about 6000 tons of lubricants in 2008 in Syria in partnership with Alimco and it works on developing such an activity in the region.
TOTAL has promoted for many years the significance of developing new relationship between the international oil companies (IOCs) and the national ones (NOCs) towards a new and efficient partnership in order to optimize the transfer of know-how and to improve the decision-making. TOTAL EP Syrie is currently working on building such new relationship with the General Petroleum Corporation aiming to support the economic development in Syria.
TOTAL, as the second international oil & gas producer in the Middle East, is a first world class partner benefiting from:
- Its international experience in all energy domains
- Its strong historical presence and long term partnerships in 9 countries of the Middle East with most oil and gas reserves
- Its regional expertise in Geosciences recognized by the NOCs.
- Its diversified presence in most countries, allowing to develop synergies between the Group’s various branches
- Its capability to run and manage huge projects, to get financing under very competitive conditions, to build high efficient working teams and to develop sophisticated projects as well, being respectful of the schedule and the budgets (Dolphin project, Yemen LNG project).
- Its commitment towards host countries and communities beyond the execution of the technical projects by giving priority to health, safety, environment and sustainable development.
TOTAL E&P Syrie provides support to a number of sustainable development projects concerning the fields of health, education, environment, and culture. In Syria, such support is focused within the Deir ez Zor governorate and is carried out in cooperation with the local entities and through international NGOs recognized in the country.
As an environmentally friendly company, TOTAL has developed for many years the renewable energy activities, particularly the solar energy. Today, TOTAL produces high-efficiency solar energy cells through “Photovoltec” company and it develops, equips and installs integrated solar energy systems through another company called “Tenesol” (which executed projects in Mali/South Africa/Morocco). Furthermore, TOTAL is participating in a tender to participate in a R&D project on Concentrated Solar Energy in the Middle East region.
