Shell Global Solutions: Power waste in Homs and Banias Refineries are about 185 million $ a year … employees in both refineries 16-18 times more that Shell employment indicator

Shell Global Solutions presented its final report about evaluating the reality of Refining industry in Homs and Banias Refineries and the recommendations to improve this reality.

These recommendations came as result of more than one year study through Power point view presented by the Expert Andrew Mortimer Project Manager in a Symposium held by General Establishment for oil refining and derivatives for this purpose.

Mortimer indicated in the report to the gaps between current situation and what would be after bridging the gap either by changing operating ways or common brain attitudes that improve refineries work bearing in mind to shorten the resulted expenses in all areas including Hydrocarbon management and the quality and efficiency of communication with the production process from the moment of the arrival of crude to the refinery to the moment of derived oil arrival to the consumer.

Mortimer and his team concluded a set of conclusions, notably that of Homs Refinery consumes 2.5 times what should be consumed the same amount of energy production for the same category of refineries as well as the case for the Banias refinery, which consumes 1.7 times the consumption of energy must be compared with their counterparts of the same class would mean a significant waste of energy in both refineries is estimated at 185 million dollars annually.

He pointed out that the Syrian market is a growing one and it is to grow up to 5% a year as the number of cars and vehicles increase to up to 10% per annum in contrast, Syrian light crude production is declining, which means that refiners will be forced to change its modus operandi to cope with this new mix. And exit of the working units in the refineries of the service for a long term to carry out periodical amendment which amounts to 20% of their time during the year which is not in line with international standards and not in harmony with the attitude of «Shell», which requires action for as long as possible and profitable through the achievement of reliability machinery for the longest period of operation as possible.

Mortimer and his team noted that what leads the work of the refineries is the plan for specific production in terms of quantity that is, they are not limited to quantitative economic scheme along the lines of international standards that aim to improve the value of production by improving the quality and thereby raising profitability is generated, and perhaps this is one of the most important dilemmas need to be addressed.

At the level of decision-making «Shell» team saw as based on personal experiences and individual workers in this industry does not depend on a systematic basis, data collection and analysis. In terms of occupational health and safety and the environment team found that the dominant culture here relies on the reaction is not a sense of initiative in terms of prevention and to avoid problems at all.

The team stopped also when large numbers of labor force in both government refineries compared with their counterparts in other countries, amounting to between 16-18 times compared with the index of «Shell» Employment (spi) and four times the number in their Turkish counterparts.

With regard to pollution group noted «Shell» to the size of the major pollution in the water emerging from processing units, which are in the Asi River enhanced his photos, adding that what led us to distinguish between water input and water output is the landscape plantings and trees on a point in the river downstream.
