Participiants in Workshop in Damascus evaluates the 1st phase of Euro-Arab Mashreq Gas Market project and the 1st steps of the 2nd phase that will be start in the mid of next year.

 

 


They discussed the 1st phase of Euro-Arab Mashreq Gas Market project
During four past years since Euro-Arab council was founded on 2006 in Damascus and ways of enhancing cooperation in gas markets between the participant states (Syria –Jordan and Egypt) in addition to the agreement on plans and programs of the 2nd phase that will stat in 2010 by joining of Iraq.

 

 

Eng. Sufian Allaw Minister of oil and Mineral Resources said that the meeting aims to review the last four years and how the project will help and contribute to develop the energy issues and treating the problems to enhance the regional cooperation with EU.

 

Ambassador Mr. Vassilis Bontosoglou, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Syria said for his part that the 1st phase of the project was succeed in putting the main plan for gas in the region and encouraging the net improvement and establishing an active Arab Gas Market added that Regional Cooperation in Gas Sector to extend until 2013

 

After four years of activity, high level representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria will meet together with the EU representatives to review the achievements of the Euro-Arab Mashreq Gas Market Phase 1 project and agree the outline of the Phase 2 of the project likely to start mid-2010. Representatives from Iraq and Turkey will also attend the meeting as observers. The EAMGM Phase 2 will welcome Iraq as a full Partner Country.

The EU is currently providing over € 250 million in funding for projects in support of the Syrian Government’s modernisation process, including areas such as higher education, private sector development, environment, tourism, energy and health.

 

The Euro-Arab Mashreq Gas Co-operation Centre (EAMGCC) was established in Damascus in January 2006 to promote gas markets co-operation between Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria and between these countries and the EU.
