Shell has a workshop on “Responding to oil pollution at sea” in Banias

With the participation of 35 employees of the various national companies operating in the oil and gas and the Ministry of Environment and various sectors responsible for national contingency plan, Dr. Hassan Zeinab, Deputy Minister of Oil inaugurated the workshop “Responding to oil leak at sea” set up by Syria Shell in cooperation with the Ministry of oil and mineral Resources in Banias.

 

 


the workshop which will last from 2-3 th November includes 2009 Series of lectures that discuss the role of government institutions and non-governmental organizations in combating the oil spill and the definition of key standards used by Shell in the fight against the oil spill in the sea and the importance of adhering to international accepted among States to protect the environment In addition to discuss the mechanism for the emergency plan and clarify the importance of the work of departments concerned and their coordination in this area.

 
this workshop aims to:


• Review the international laws and responsibilities relating to marine oil pollution.
• Review emergency procedures in case of local pollution or oil spill.
• an opportunity for discussion and dialogue with officials of the national contingency plan.
• The participation of the audience in the experience of Shell in the event of an oil spill
• a theoretical exercise for the process of oil spill and how to coordinate and manage emergency operations.
Dr. Hassan Zainab said the ministry is working hard to utilize all opportunities locally, regionally or globally for the development of local cadres, adding that the workshop provided an example of what global expertise to supplement local staff with the latest information and techniques in responding to oil spill and oil pollution control in the sea as well as for coordination between all sectors of government responsible for the national contingency plan through free debate and fruitful to get the best results.

 
In turn, Eng. Numair Makhlouf Director-General of the Syrian Company for Oil Transport welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of this workshop by gathering officials working in the field of public emergency plan in Syria and the need to exchange experience and knowledge among local and foreign staff are available explaining that the Syrian Company for Oil Transport with extensive experience in the fight against oil pollution and to respond to any emergencies that might threaten the work and property and the environment.

 

Ghaleb Suleiman, Deputy Director General of Syria Shell said .. “We offer this workshop to the certain knowledge of the importance of the topic of (oil pollution at sea), and how to respond to and recover from the negative result of Shell’s extensive experience in this area and also to our desire to share experience with the parties, the Syrian government responsible for the national contingency plan.”
