Shell expects Iraq will be the most important source of gas in area

Officials in Shell international company stressed that Iraq has huge reserve of gas that put it among of the most ten important producing countries in the world when need of gas decrease internationally to generate electric power.

Muneer boaziz deputy head of shell in Middle East clarified that Iraq is able to produce more than 700 million regular cubic feet of accompanied gas enough to cover local consumption and to export.

He estimated in an interview with al-Hayat newspaper that more than 70% of Iraqi gas is of gas accompanied to oil extraction that make the estimations and reports of assembly said that Iraq lose by 80 million dollar a day.

He as well as indicated to the burn quantities of gas per day which is enough to meet double needs electric power of country such as Jordan and of 300.000 of gas bottle per day, where as it import huge quantities from neighboring countries.

He indicated that burning Iraqi gas cause yearly of accumulation of 20 million tons of CO2.stressing that Iraq can export gas to Europe or join it with Arab gas pipeline or Gulf gas pipeline.

Shell cooperates with Iraqi government since 2005 to put a study to determine gas production in order to use and refine it .

 
It enabled to sign an initial contract with the government to marketing south gas in al-Basra.

But signing contract with the company was controversial among Iraq arena because it was not presented to the assembly.

Boaziz clarified that government chose Shell because it is the only international company in all Arab countries so that it has experience in gas development in the area , as well as it had many contributions in developing projects to improve gas extraction and consumption operations in addition to many other important contributions.

He also stressed the company’s readiness to start work in using south gas as soon as the final contract is signed which will contains establishing of new company included South gas and companies.

He clarified that the new company will rehabilitate South gas employees to help in developing of gas industry in Iraq, and 51% of these employees will be Iraqis.
