Alao: agreements with Total aim to cooperate in key areas and achieve greater interest for Syria

Eng. Sufian Alao Minister of Oil and Mineral resources said that the three agreements signed with France oil and gas field “aimed at cooperation in several key areas of prospecting and exploration for oil in new fields on land and at sea, in addition to the development of the fields using old techniques of enhanced oil.”
The oil minister added that “agreement was signed a general cooperation between Syrian Oil Company and the Syrian Gas Company with Total Exploration and Production company.”
The oil minister said, “This agreement is seeking to develop gas fields and development of low yield, especially in some parts of the central region, and to cooperate in the import and export of gas and hydrocarbons to and from neighboring countries.”
In the same context, Alao said that another agreement was signed with the French side to extend the development of production sharing contracts signed between the Syrian Oil and the Syrian government and Total in 1988 and which expires gradually as of 2010, for a period of 10 years. ”
The oil minister added that “this extension came in accordance with the new conditions, taking into account the change in oil prices and the benefit of the greater part of Syria.”
He pointed out that “third agreement signed with Total investment is concentrated on the quantities of the gas field located in Taba,” noting that “it was agreed to cooperate in exploiting this gas to allow greater quantities of gas produced from gas plant at Deir Al-Zour 1.5 million Cubic meters per day, and for a period of 7 years. ” Adding “this will bring great benefit to the national economy, in particular, we urgently need now for natural gas to supply our electricity and industrial facilities.”
It is noteworthy that Total begun its work in Syria since in 1988 through operating excellence through the Deir Al-Zour oil company which is a joint venture (50% Total, 50% Syrian Oil Company), where production was produced by Total group in Syria 29 thousand barrels of oil per day in 2007.
